What a Texan Eats

Cracker Barrel Country Breakfast

Ever since Mitchell confessed that his favorite restaurant is the Cracker Barrel (after all, they are both from Georgia), I have been wanting to go here for breakfast. I originally intended on getting pancakes, but when it came right down to it I wanted to Country Breakfast, complete with scrambled eggs, bacon, hashbrown casserole, and a biscuit. The eggs were good but slightly underdone for my taste and greasy. The bacon was also excessively greasy and I chose to only eat two of my three slices. This was wise because I found out a few hours later that two slices of bacon has about two thousand calories. There was nothing wrong with the hashbrowns, they were actually very good, until I found a piece of corn mixed in with them and that made me not want to eat it anymore. There's something about finding a kernel of corn where it doesn't belong that really irritates me. The biscuit was perfect though, in all its buttery bready warm flaky glory.

Refried Black Bean (with a hint of lime) Nachos

Ariana and her mom continue to impress me with their cooking. They got out a block of cojack and used a cheese grater to grate it over the chips and then broiled that in the oven. Then they made the refried black bean dip with sour cream and green onions separately. If it was my mom, she just would have nuked the whole thing (and I still would have loved it). I had never heard of refried black beans before, but they were really good. I think I am going to have to start making my own tacos with them. The hint of lime really adds something to the beans as well. The only bad thing about this was watching Ariana eat spoonfulls of refried beans out of a can.

Wing Stop

As I'm sure you know, tonight was the battle between Ohio State and Florida. Naturally, wings were in order. I got the mild, because after looking through my food blog, I realized I've been eating too much spicy food lately and I need to calm down a little. My dad went for the cajun because that's his favorite. I can barely eat the cajun, because the hot sauce and the pepper are so overwhelming. As expected, the mild were underwhelming. But at least I could enjoy them for their other good qualities, like chewy meat and fried skin. Also there was no one there to pressure me to eat wings with a fork.

Wing Stop Fries

These are the stuff of legends. I think they use sugar and salt to season them, or at least something sweet. They are addictive, which is something I rarely say about food.

Feast for the Eyes: Betty Crocker's Cookbook

Ariana's mom gave this to me today, and I've already almost read it cover to cover. She really wants me to learn how to be a lady. But really, it looks like a great way to start cooking things I wouldn't otherwise, and it's super retro. I promise I won't end up barefoot and pregnant.

Yellow Cake, Choco Frosting

My brother-in-law called me tonight during the game and said, "jaaaaaaa. Your sister doesn't feel well. She wants you to make her a cake." I could hear my nephews screaming, "cake!" in the background. I happily agreed to make it. We didn't have any chocolate frosting though, so I flipped open my new amazing cookbook and found the perfect recipe. This is the first time I've made icing at home with making the lipids weep and ruining it. It was very good, if I do say so myself. My sister liked it too, but she's pregnant and I know she's been craving cake for a few days. The boys get to have it for breakfast tomorrow, so we'll see what they say.
